Linfield v. UW Stevens Point Recap

It was a long way to come for a butt kicking for the Pointers, Linfield 45, UWSP 7. Linfield QB Brett Elliott put on another clinic, and claimed another record in the Linfield book. The real story was the dominance of the Linfield defense, which only let the Pointers past the 50 a couple times all game. In fact, the 7 points they got a best attributed to special teams, since they were set up by a blocked punt returned to the Linfield 4 yard line.

Elliott's line:

26 for 39, 365 yds, 4 TDs and 2 Ints

Elliott set the school record for career TD passes at 71, doing it in only 15 games! Here's the new list:

71 - Brett Elliott - 2004- Present
69 - Tyler Matthews - 2000-03
65 - David Lindley - 1983-86

Looks like he might put that record further out of reach!

Linfield v. UW Stevens Point: Preview

With Linfield generally blowing teams out last season, many people wonder if QB Brett Elliott has what it takes to bring the 'Cats from behind when needed. The reality is that Linfield played from behind a couple times, included during the playoffs.

But their most challenging game, aside from the National Championship, had to be their away game at Wisconsin- Stevens Point. The Pointers were nationally ranked and hadn't lost at home to another DIII program since the early 70's. Linfield fell behind by 10 points on two occaisions before a tremendous fourth quarter showing by Elliott. He ended the game with these stats:

37 of 59, 480 yards, 6 TDs

Completions, attempts and yards all set new school records. In the fourth quarter he was 10 of 12 passes for 143 yards.

This year, the Pointers may the trip to McMinville to face the 'Cats. This should still be one of the better games of the season. As the home opener, the atmosphere should be quite exciting. And playing on Linfield's field turf - versus the natural grass at Stevens Point - should be an advantage for Linfield.

Elliott Has Strong Season Opener

Brett Elliott started the 2005 season with an excellent game leading the Wildcats to a 49-7 victory over Western Oregon on the Wolves' home field. Although it took him an extra quarter versus his output in '04, Elliott posted similar stats:


25 for 37, 361 yds, 6 TDs


While Western shut down the long ball - Elliott & Co. burned them three times on the bomb last year - his control of the offense was outstanding. He shook off an early hard sack from the Wolves, a hyper-extended knee according to Elliott, to have little trouble picking apart the Wolves D.

Linfield v. Western Oregon Preview

Linfield has its season opener tomorrow at Western Oregon. The Wolves are a Division II school that used to play in the same league as Linfield (NAIA).

Last season, the Wildcats thumped Western Oregon 58-17 at home. Here is Elliott's line from that game, his first as Linfield's QB:

18 for 27, 0 int, 66.7% completion, 363 yards, 5 TDS

Elliott also ran for a TD. His TD tosses included a 79-yarder to George Carter, a 75 yarder to Brandon Hazenberg, and a 52-yarder to Casey Allen.

It is important to note that Elliott ONLY PLAYED THE FIRST HALF.

Western Oregon appears to be an improved team this year based on their 35-0 defeat last week of DIII Willamette University. It will be interesting to see if their improvement coupled with home field advantage impacts Elliott's performance. We'll give a recap of tomorrow's game, including photos, next week.
